Bad and Nasty (the mad geniuses behind February’s nationwide Not My President’s Day protest event) is calling on playwrights, poets, and wordsmiths to create short performative texts for their next protest event on June 14th, 2017, which is Flag day and… Donald Trump’s 71st birthday.
So of course the Protest Plays Project agreed to help!
We are currently accepting submissions to share with Bad and Nasty coordinators via the PPP website. If your piece meets our guidelines, we’ll post it on our site where creative protestors will be able to read through and select pieces for readings or performance at their “Flag Day/Un-Birthday” events. Submissions accepted through 5/15 (so we have time to read everthing and get it out to collaborators)
Bad and Nasty is looking for:
1) Short skits, plays, or poems around the b-day theme. Think, birthday toasts, parodies of Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday Mr. President.” (They have a lot of drag performers!) Funny, upbeat, pointed, angry, campy with shade…just about any tone will do.
2) Pieces that explore the flag theme – a’la, “Patriot acts” and other flag inspired approaches that shine a light on your objections to the current administration.
**Bad and Nasty Birthday/Flag Day events will be taking place anywhere and everywhere on 6/14/17 – so write with the following in mind: Readings and Performances will mainly be taking place in backyards, living rooms, cabarets, and street corners… AKA, write SHORT pieces that are free from major set/prop requirements!**
If you’d like to submit a performative text (play, monologue, poem, etc), please click HERE to complete our submission form/share your written work by 5/15/17
FYI: There are other ways you can participate in Bad and Nasty’s event – so definitely check out their website if you’d like more information about how to get involved, how to host an event in your community, or just to learn more about the kind of kick-ass creative power they’re putting to work!
